Government’s abattoir CCTV proposal
An announcement by the Environment Secretary, Michael Gove, has declared that abattoir CCTV is to become compulsory for areas within them where live animals are kept in an attempt to preserve the UK’s position as a world leader on animal welfare. The decision will be fiinalised following a six week consultation which began this month.
The government’s manifesto stated that every slaughterhouse and abattoir in England should have CCTV present in each area where live animals are kept. Currently, the UK is a world leader in its treatment of animals in these places, and the addition of compulsory abattoir CCTV will only continue to prove the country’s commitment to the fair treatment of animals.
Of the new law, Michael Gove commented, “We have some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world and the actions I am setting out today will reinforce our status as a global leader. As we prepare to leave the EU, these measures provide a further demonstration to consumers around the world that our food is produced to the very highest standards.”
The Food Standards Agency and Official Veterinarians will have access to the footage to assist in their enforcement of animal welfare standards in slaughterhouses. They currently ensure slaughterhouses are only approved following strict processes and specially trained vets carry out checks to ensure the animals’ welfare is protected whilst at the slaughterhouses.
Abattoir CCTV an invaluable management tool
“I and the Board of the FSA warmly welcome Defra’s consultation about making CCTV mandatory. We look forward to the introduction of a comprehensive requirement for using, accessing and retaining footage from CCTV in abattoirs,” commented Heather Hancock, Chairman of the Food Standards Agency. “We see CCTV as an invaluable management tool for business owners to help with compliance with official controls and to improve animal welfare standards across the industry,” she continued.
